This has been marketed to Tata Steel (Jamshedpur), National Metallurgical Laboratory (Jamshedpur), Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (Koraput), and BARC (Trombay). There are several other pending inquiries for this system. The system provides a cross-sectional image of the internal structure and possess a powerful image analysis software for counting the number and size of inclusions in steel ingots that is developed by the nominee. Tata Steel originally planned to import this system from Germany, but after discussion with the nominee decided to develop it indigenously at a fraction of the proposed import costs. The feedback from Tata Steel has been excellent and they have been able to recuperate their capital costs for this equipment in less than 60 days. The system was used for optimizing the electromagnetic stirring process as well as in the grain refinement studies, both of which lead to reduction in reject rates in the plant.
